Missing teeth can lead to more than just aesthetic displeasure. The adjacent teeth can start shifting, bone loss can occur in the jaw and spacing can encourage tooth decay or periodontal disease to settle in. In order to prevent these from occurring, patients may choose to get dentures.
Dentures are custom-fitted, artificial replacements for missing teeth and the surrounding gum tissue. At Dr. Komal Jain & Associates Dentistry, our dentures can be made with hardened porcelain and acrylic resin to look as natural as possible.
Dentures are made by taking a series of impressions of your jaw after tooth loss or removal. Next, wax denture models are constructed and tested to ensure optimal comfort and alignment. Finally, the denture is cast and ready for use. Ongoing adjustments can then be made if necessary.
Types of dentures:
- Partial dentures: These are made up of one or more teeth attached to a gum-coloured base and affixed to a metal framework. This frame can be inserted alongside your existing teeth, forming a bridge. You can take the partial denture out yourself for cleaning and at night.
- Complete dentures: When most of your natural teeth are no longer present or must be removed, full or complete dentures must be created. You can take the partial denture out yourself for cleaning and at night.
- Immediate dentures: These are made before your teeth are removed and can be inserted immediately after your teeth are extracted. This means you are not without teeth during the healing period, which can take up to 6 months.
- Conventional dentures: These are made and inserted into your mouth after your teeth have been extracted and the gums and jaw tissues have healed.
